Boise Invitational/Open 2015 Day 2
The Boise Invitational 2015 continues, with three rounds to determine who is the best. The Boise Open also kicks off, where players are judged on generalship, army appearance, and sportsmanship, with the winner the player who embodies all three the best.
The Invitational uses the classic swiss pairings for each round, so players are matched based on their win/loss and their battle points earned throughout the event.
The mission for Round 2 was ITC Scenario 2.
Seth’s zombie list continues to do well. The Hounds claim ground, the artillery pounds the opponent, while the zombies with their 4+ Feel No Pain shuffle forward and hold ground. Bill’s Battle Company and Lucas’ Knights pull out narrow victories against tough opponents. Scott again faced a Tyranid list with Flyrants that seem to be his nemesis during this event. Finally, Zac’s War Convocation beat Jamin’s Ravenwing, with his Knight stomping out Sammael and vector locking Jamin’s two fighters and destroying them by not allowing him to place his model 18″ forward.
Invitational Round 3
The mission for Round 3 was ITC Scenario 5.
Seth R. v. Josh: Seth wins 10-0
Bill v. Aaron: Aaron wins 6-5
Lucas v. Scott: Lucas wins 7-1
Kyle v. Andrew: Kyle wins 7-0
Evan v. Zac: Evan wins 6-5
Seth H. v. Jamin: Seth wins 11-1
Josh’s reign of Ignores Cover terror ends with his first loss to Seth R’s list after he lost a unit of Broadsides first turn to laser destroyers. Bill and Aaron’s dueling Battle Companies duke it out to see who can shove the most marines on the board at once; Aaron pulls a narrow victory. Andrew loses his first game to Kyle’s tough Riptide/Wraithknight list. Scott tried keeping most of his army off the board to outflank but Lucas’ Knights win the game. Evan pulls a narrow victory after Zac’s assassin failed to get the run distance he needed to contest the Emperor’s will objective. Seth H’s Grey Knights take down Jamin’s Ravenwing.
Invitational Final Round
The mission for the final round is ITC Scenario 6
Top Table: Seth v. Kyle: Seth wins 11-0!
Bill v. Evan: Bill wins 10-2
Lucas v. Zac: Lucas wins 10-2
Josh v. Aaron: Tie!
Seth M v. Andrew: Tie!
Jamin v. Scott: Jamin wins 7-6
The top table pitted Kyle’s Wraithknight and two Riptides against Seth’s mass of zombies. After a tough battle Seth R. emerged victorious! Josh and Aaron and Seth M. and Andrew each battled to a tie finish. Bill’s Battle Company withstood Evan’s Flyrants, while Jamin beat Scott in a very close battle.
Boise Invitational 2015 Champion: Seth Rourk
Second Place: Bill Friend
Third Place: Lucas Gray
Fourth Place: Josh Strole
Seth Rourk’s Lost and the Damned list took on all comers this year and was victorious. The list itself has great synergy and plays the objective game better than even the Battle Companies. He plans on taking it to the Las Vegas Open, so look out future opponents!
Bill’s Battle Company got massacred in most of his games, but it does not matter when it can play to the mission so well. Lucas’ Imperial Knights prove that they can still be a force to be reckoned with. Josh’s Tau and Necrons were a great pair; tough Wraiths backed up by crazy firepower.
The Boise Open was changed up this year. The open was modeled after the old Rogue Trader tournaments that GW used to put on. It had a best painted award, best generalship award, and best sportsmanship award and the overall champion will be the highest scoring of all three categories. We used the Forge the Narrative Missions for the Open which from past experience we have found to be very fun and balanced. We also allowed 30k armies.
We had a nice turnout with 12 players, but what is most important is that we saw a great mixture of players. We had veterans, brand new players coming to their first event, and we had a few come out of “retirement” who have not played an event in many years. It was a fantastic success.
Boise Open Champion: Ryan Boudreau
Top General: Charlie Kerber
Best Painted: Sean Johnson
Best Sportsmanship: Nathan Braithwaite
Ryan truly deserved to be the Boise Open Champion this year; he went undefeated, had a fantastic Demonkin army, and was a great sportsman. Charlie played his Demon list extremely well, while Sean’s Blood Angels were the top among some fantastic looking armies. Nathan, despite, (or maybe because of), running on no sleep from the day before was our top sportsman for this event. But really, every single player deserved a piece of this award because they all had fun and were great opponents.
