Episode 75: The Fall 2018 FAQ
In this episode, we talk about the recent 40k FAQ posted by Games Workshop. We discuss what we think the purpose and the intent is behind these FAQs as well as go into some detail on how these FAQs will change the game for you. This is another podcast on the changing nature of the game and its impact on the ruleset, which has changed a lot in the 15 months since this new edition of 40k has been out.
Purpose of the FAQs; what does GW hope to accomplish with these? (besides nerfing your favorite army)
Do they balance the game? What does this look like?
We think they want the game to be the kind of game they play, incentivize what they think the game should be and make things that are not in their vision of the game more costly/less attractive to take.
What kind of game do they want?
- Simple to learn, easy mechanics
- Fits the lore/narrative they they put out
- Less “gotcha” moments, want a slower game with less quick tabling or frustrating moments
- Gameplay that lets you “suspends your disbelief”
Do they always have to nerf something? Can’t they make other things better?
Do we want GW to retreat to the ivory tower, or do we want them to be involved in the game?
No points increases; they will save that for Chapter Approved. This was not an FAQ to balance the game, but it makes changes to the Matched Play rules with an eye toward points balancing in Chapter Approved.
Beta rules for Soup detachments was changed to be permanent.
Targeting for shooting changes, they made it clear that when you declare your shots from a unit, you have to say which guns are going into which targets before your opponent decides to spend stratagems. Clarified that everyone shoots everything UNLESS it’s a once a game weapon and then you don’t have to shoot it.
Can’t skip a phase; can Heroically Intervene even if your opponent did not charge.
Changes to “fly” units: biggest change is for charging!
- Agents of Vect is 4CP, you can’t use it before the battle or during deployment. You have to have Kabal of the Black Heart units on the table to use it.
- On wings of fire is 2CP
- Our Darkest Hour changed to 3 CP.
- Oathbreaker Guidance System is now 3 CP
- Raven is 3 CP, can re-roll a “2” on a d3
New Beta Rules
- No “deep strike” at ALL turn 1, so no unit from reserves can come on to the board until turn 2.
- Points rather than Power Level
- Alpha Legion, Stygies, & Ravenguard’s ability changed to a 9” move on the first turn, rather than null deploy.
- Rangers are now Deep Strike
Prepared Positions for 2 CP.
Tactical Restraint; no more than 1 CP per battle round.
Army Specific Changes
Tyranids: Pathogenic Slime is declared at th beginning of the shooting phase now.
Astra Militarum: Slabshield doesn’t work on Invulnerable saves, only on armor saves. Jury Rigging; they specified that you can only use it once per turn. Take cover ONLY works on armor saves now.
Tau: description of how multi wound damage is passed to drones and an attack is a shooting or melee attack. Sneaky change to Tigersharks.
Deathwatch: targeting scramblers happens after Tau player resolves all shooting attacks with unit with marker lights.
Genestealer Cult: they confirmed that you can move after coming from deep strike with Cult Ambush. You can use return to the shadows after the 3rd turn without your unit being “destroyed” because it’s past the point that tactical reserves can come in. GSC can’t come in first turn anymore.
Necrons: Monoliths and Night Scythes are clarified as disembarking from them.
Eldar: can’t use the phantasm stratagem in conjunction with webway stratagem.
Marines: can’t bring back your cherub with the Apothecary ability.
Space Wolves: Chooser of the Slain is changed to be Space Wolf only.
Demons: warp surge changed so that you get +1 Invuln save however can’t reroll any saves. Max save of 4++.
How would this change our games?
Harvester Experience: Mark and Matt’s experience with the Smash Captain List.
What does this mean for the game moving forward? What will the points changes mean in Chapter Approved?
