Episode 89: Playing to the Missions
In this episode, we talk about playing to the mission. In Warhammer 40k, killing units is not enough to win. Playing to the mission means never losing sight of what it takes to win the game. We talk briefly about our experience with the new Eternal War and Maelstrom missions, but we will focus mainly on the two major competitive mission formats in North America: ITC and Nova missions.
Our experience with Chapter Approved Eternal War and Maelstrom missions.
What are their strengths/weaknesses for competitive play?
Do they offer every type of army a path to victory?
Fixed versus random Map deployment
Fixed versus objective placement
Tips for objective placement
Progressive scoring versus end of game scoring.
Nova has the option for progressive versus end of game. (Discuss Nova format).
You have to keep up with your opponent; have to know what their objectives are each turn as well as your own.
You often have to shoot inefficiently or move a unit out of position or even advance rather than shoot to score for progressive scoring.
First versus second turn; the advantages of going first versus second.
Before the game begins, but after you know what the map is if you are rolling for it with ITC, you pick your secondaries.
Killing Units Secondaries
- Marked for Death
- Gang busters
- Big Game Hunter
- Pick your Poison
- Butchers Bill
- The Reaper (CAN stack)
- Moment of Bloodshed (Butchers Bill)
- Cull the Hordes (The Reaper)
- Strike the rank and file
- Marked for death (Same)
- Shoot the big ones (big game, but 10 wounds)
- Headhunter (same)
When to pick killing unit secondaries? Every list will have something that will qualify for at least one of these, but is it easy to get?
Standing Somewhere Secondaries
- Behind enemy lines
- King of the hill
- Ground Control (end of game)
- Breakthrough (1 unit behind enemy lines)
- Reconnaissance (Recon)
Old School (both)
Should you tailor your list to give up fewer secondaries?
Example Lists for Secondaries
